Old Hall, Chelsworth

Sector

Heritage, Residential

The Old Hall sits on the east bank of the River Brett, within the Chelsworth Conservation Area. Our proposals reimagine the house through a series of carefully composed extensions and alterations.

The existing mono-pitched living room, converted from a former garage, is replaced with a single-storey cross-gabled pavilion. Its north-west elevation opens up with full-height steel-framed glazing that looks out to the river. A white painted timber loggia runs along the glass and frames a new dining terrace beside the garden. At the heart of the house, a reworked courtyard becomes a glazed cloister. Above the existing flat roof, a weatherboarded double-gable extension adds a bedroom and bathroom. A new garage anchors the south-west corner, aligned on the axis of the living room. Patinated standing-seam zinc roofs, white weatherboard and render tie old and new together, and a remodelled boundary wall and gateway give the house a more considered arrival.
