Crescent Road, Aldeburgh
Sector
Residential
The site was originally a garden for Danes House, on Lee Road. The new home is slightly set back from the boundary with two parking spaces on site to the south. The L-shaped plan creates a planted garden with a small rear linear shrubbery. The front portion of the site is two storey, with a single storey behind. The main façade along Crescent Road is flat roofed with an asymmetrical parapet, suggesting a playful nod to the formal Dutch gable opposite. At ground floor the bay containing the kitchen creates a balcony at first floor and modulates the facade.
The front door is off the street, via a covered porch with a small bench leading into a hallway, off of which is a cloakroom and utility space. The kitchen / diner looks out onto the street with doors out onto the rear garden. The single storey element contains the sitting room and an accessible ensuite bedroom. These are future proofed for assisted living. A staircase leads up to two bedrooms and a shared bathroom.
The materials palette combines elements of both traditional and contemporary architecture to create a welcoming and familiar home: traditional dark brick base; zinc roofing; natural render; weathered timber cladding; painted timber details. High quality materials are proposed, being of low to moderate embodied energy or highly recyclable. All materials are intended to have a long life span, reducing additional materials being used in future maintenance.
The house received planning permission in September 2025.
