The Coach House, Suffolk
Sector
Residential
The Coach House takes its name from its original function. It served as a working building, subordinate to the main residence next door. The modest suburban 1950’s structure that replaced it betrays nothing of this history. The design retains and remodels the existing structure.
The existing roof line is extended to the east over an existing flat-roofed area, and the garage to the west is replaced with a new lean-to, creating a more resolved and laconic massing. Dormer windows are introduced, the largest linked to ground level by vertical timber cladding that creates an ambiguous scale and evokes the non-domestic history of the building without pastiche. A large front opening with glazing into a double-height entrance hall completes the coach house reference. The palette of gault brick, flint, vertical timber cladding and pantiles ties the building to the coastal vernacular of Southwold.
Inside, the open plan ground floor flows from kitchen and dining room down the sloping site into the family room, with expansive views across the south-facing garden. Above are four en-suite bedrooms. The scheme received planning in 2026.
