Tom Upton

BA (Hons) March

Architectural Assistant

Tom studied architecture at the University of the West of England in Bristol, where he completed both his Part 1 and Part 2 qualifications. Throughout his undergraduate and master’s studies, he developed a strong interest in sustainable design and the role architecture can play in responding to the climate crisis. His work has focused particularly on material innovation and the creation of more environmentally responsible, resilient and community-focused places.
During the final year of his master’s degree, Tom developed a hemp-based cladding system that investigated how locally grown and manufactured materials could support more sustainable construction practices. This research was integrated into his final design project: a community-led housing scheme in Camden. The proposal explored how a large-scale residential development could regenerate a barren brownfield site while positively contributing to the surrounding urban context. In recognition of the project, Tom received a commendation from RIBA Wessex.
Outside architecture, Tom enjoys playing guitar, running and restoring classic cars. These interests reflect his appreciation for creativity, craftsmanship and the process of giving new life to ideas, materials and objects.
