smiths wine room, london

'Smiths' of Smithfield is the Grade II listed four-floor restaurant in the heart of Smithfield Market, London's only working meat market. We were approached by chef and owner John Torode to remodel the first floor cocktail bar to become a new casual dining room. The existing arrangement also included a private room with it's own discreet bar. Our solution was to open the space out and create a large democratic dining room with two separate small private rooms. The edge of the space is defined by a rustic timber wine wall that extends up to the ceiling and contains crates of special wine. The linear white marble bar is finished off with a polished brass foot rail and is designed so that customers may eat there. The menu is written up on blackboards that are held within the wine wall. A new pine floor was also laid lending a warm ambience to the room contrasting with the black oiled oak used for all the furniture and fixtures. Project Orange also designed two freestanding screens and trestle tables made by Benchmark Woodworking. The new walls are painted a muddy green colour while the private wine room is Suffolk Pink (a reference to whitewash made pink through the addition of Bulls' Blood, which is also a wine).
