On purchasing of the property, the client 's primary intention was to divide the space, a very generous 2 bed, 1 bath apartment, back into two units to create two, two bed/two bath units. The apartment had originally been intended to be two units, however both shells were purchased together and the dividing party wall was never constructed.
The twin apartments are located within the Bankside Lofts development adjacent to the Tate Modern and orientated to overlook the river Thames. With dual aspect and a loft style interior space, the large expanses of glazing to the front elevation take in stunning views of the city, and a mezzanine allows a level of separation for the bedrooms as well as access to rear windows and balconies.
An additional part of the brief was to maximise the floor space whilst retaining the double height space to the front of the apartment, and was achieved by extending the existing mezzanine and constructing new staircases to work with the new layouts. For reasons of economy the two flats were designed to be very similar, however differences with the fenestration to the rear on the mezzanine level has resulted in slightly differing internal spaces.
The master bedroom is located at the front edge of the mezzanine with a sliding folding screen which allows the bedroom to be closed off for privacy when required or open to the view. The high gloss lacquer finish of the screen allows a reflective box to be created when the doors are closed, reflecting light and the external view.
