The works to this Grade II listed flat in Mayfair were the second phase of Project Orange works to this residence. The lower 2 floors of a Georgian townhouse have been extensively refurbished and connected through to the rear mews house, (Hays mews –Phase 1 completed in 2005), to consolidate the two properties as one. The new section of the house adds a further 2 bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, and a formal Reception and Dining Room to the property.
A key objective was to improve the connection of the two sections of the house and enhance the quality of the spaces to restore some of the original grandeur of the listed building whilst updating it to sit comfortably with the contemporary refurbishment of the Mews house.
The initial move was to restore the original layout, from that that had been created when the listed building had been converted into flats. The stair to the basement was relocated from the reception to its original location under the main stairwell in order to reinstate the distinguished nature of the two living spaces to the ground floor.
The conversion of the building had also resulted in the flat being stripped of most of the original features and our intension was to restore some of this richness and elegance, which was achieved in a contemporary manner through the flush timber wall panelling and lining of doors and windows and shadow gap details throughout.
Additionally the existing stair up to the master bedroom in Hays Mews was also re-constructed to allow a new connecting passageway through from the Hays Mews kitchen, along the side of the internal lightwell to the entrance lobby of Charles Street.
The palette of materials are kept simple and elegant with dark oak floors and wall panelling, polished statuary marble bathrooms and high gloss lacquered joinery. The dark panelled lobby and staircase create a dramatic descent into the basement whist creating a contrast to the light bedrooms and white marble bathrooms to capitalise on the natural daylight and give a feeling of space within a limited ceiling height.
